Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Our Thriller film had a plot line which directly linked to a specific demographic and this demographic also had very clear and stereotypical psychographics. The demographics of our film 'Alter-ego' would be targeted as 15-18 year old's, typically female although both genders can enjoy the film. The story line of our film suits the age range as the main idea of the film is about a young teenage girl who has been mentally effected by the media's images of women and what a person should look like and so she has created an 'alter-ego' in her mind which is the side of her personality which is dark and corrupted. The idea of teenagers being effected by images in magazines, TV and the internet is a very current problem and so teenagers age 15-18 will connect to the story line and relate to the demographics in our thriller.

In order to gain information from our target audience about what their expectations of a thriller film are or their preferences for a thriller opening, we used the method of a VoxPop. We targeted the research towards the audience we wanted our thriller film to be for. We knew roughly what our different ideas for our thriller film would be and each had the same target audience, so we wanted a method of asking questions to members of the public or our target audience age to find out what they would want from our thriller opening titles.

From our VoxPop we discovered that suspense is a key factor in thriller films and every interviewee mentioned suspense usually comes from the use of music. They mentioned that the music used can create tension and this is useful during exciting or action scenes. We were also told that excitement is a key part of thriller films and there must be some sort of action or thrilling scene that gets the viewer excited or on the edge of their seat. From the VoxPops I also learned that psychological, action and science fiction thrillers are favourite sub-genres of 15-18 year olds and although they are all different sub genres, excitement and tension was the main reason for their choices. This inspired our production because it gave us the idea to challenge ourselves and try to make a psychological thriller exciting and it inspired to make sound and music a key element of our production if our audience believes it is a key aspect of thriller films.

The BBFC stands for the British Board of Film Classification and in a non-governmental organisation which was founded by the film industry in 1912 to be responsible for the classification of films within the United Kingdom. The BBFC rating which I would choose for our Thriller film would be a rating of 15. This is because when comparing the BBFC classification system with our thriller, it matched the 15 classifications.

The BBFC regulations for 15 rated films state that:

  • "At 15 violence may be strong. It should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury."
  • "The depiction of easily accessible weapons will depend on factors such as realism, context and setting."
  • "Dangerous behaviour such as hanging, suicide or self harming may be present but will not dwell on detail."
  • "At 15 there is no upper limit on the number of uses of bad language however continued or aggressive use will not be passed at 15."

Violence may be portrayed in our thriller and blood will be shown from the out set in our opening titles, however the "infliction of pain" or injuries will not be dwelled upon. Any dangerous or self harming behaviour may be hinted upon but not be shown explicitly on screen or be glamorised. Our thriller would not be a 12 because the general story line is for more mature viewers and the BBFC state that "moderate physical and psychological threat is permitted at 12" however in our thriller the psychological aspects will not be moderate as the film is based on the severe psychological impact on the protagonist which leads me to believe that a rating of 15 is more suitable. Similarly the film would not be a 18 because there is only minimal blood or injuries shown and very frequent or aggressive bad language will not be used. Also, the BBFC states that "films rated 15 are for adults" and since our film is targeted at an audience of 15-18 year olds then rating our film an 18 will greatly reduce our audience range. The only elements our film will include are mild bad language, minimal viewing of blood or injury and a mature story line not suitable for young children.

Similarly to our film 'Alter-ego' rated 15, the film 'Scream 4' is also rated 15. 'Scream 4' is a horror-thriller but has elements of a psychological thriller too. It has a similar story line of a girl named Jill Roberts who seems innocent throughout the film and then at the end of the film she is revealed to be a psychopath and is deluded and mentally ill. Apart from the two main characters of the films being similar, the film 'Scream 4' uses mild bad language and also contains blood and violence with injuries being shown in some detail however they are not dwelled upon.
